Dead Until Dark
by Charlaine Harris
Publisher: Ace
Genre: Horror, Fantasy
"Dead Until Dark" is first in a series of books called the "Southern Vampires". The main character, Sookie Stackhouse, is a waitress in a small rural Louisiana town. Her life is forever changed when she meets the vampire Bill.
In this alternate world, vampires have "come out of the coffin" because they are no longer considered a threat to humanity after the creation of artificial blood. The vampires are thought of as a victimized minority demonized by superstition and prejudice.
The vampire Bill's attempt to integrate into the mainstream southern life is complicated by a rash of unexplained murders. Sookie must solve the murders in order to fully explore her relationship with the mysterious Bill.
The book is humorous and it has a touch of a romance novel mixed with suspence and mystery. I enjoyed this romp through the eerie version of the south.
