Celia Rivenbark - Southern Author
Aug 12, 2005
Celia Rivenbark is a Southern author, based in North Carolina. She has a weekly column for the Sun News, based out of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The has two books published:
Bless Your Heart, Tramp*, and
We're Just Like You, Only Prettier - Confessions of a Tarnished Southern Belle**
I've read both books several times and religeously read her column, which can be found at: http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/mld/myrtlebeachonline/news/columnists/celia_rivenbark/
I think of her as the Southerner's Erma Bombeck.
Celia takes every day life, turns it funny, and at the same time puts a distinct Southern charm on each and every occurance. She has the ability to poke gentle humor at ourselves, making it seem quaint and charming, instead of rednecky and ruthless. But she still easily gets her point across. I was relieved when I read her book and discovered I'm not the only one that says "Shit Fire!" when excited.
Both books again are Erma Bombeck style, seeming to perhaps be columns from her newspaper articles bound together in a book - but this is not a bad thing. Both great books to read if you're in a rush - read one chapter, have a great laugh and put the book down until you have time for the next.
There is no running story to review here. Each chapter starts with a fresh subject.
Quite simply, I have some mild asperations as a writer, and if I could write how I want, I'd be a lot like Celia.
