"The South is Round"
Mar 15, 2007

"The South is Round"
"Contemplations of a 21st Century Redneck"
Author: David Magee
Publisher: Jefferson Press
Publication Date: April, 2007
-------------------------------
I call this book a rollickin ride through Southern modern sensibilities.

David Magee is a Southern author who has written 7 books, with great names such as "The John Deere Way" and "Moon Pie". Gotta love any book with names like that.

On a personal note, I joked with Mr. Magee that he is my new best friend - here he is with 7 published books... all with ya'll spelled "Ya'll"! Finally my firm conviction that this is how it is spelled in my neck of the woods, while receiving email upon email that I don't know what I'm talking about, has received validation. Thank you David!

The South is Round is a book of short tales - as I call them. Much in the vein of Celia Rivenbark - who has a praising remark on the front cover of the book - each chapter is a glimpse into the life of Modern Day Southerners living in today's world, but with the old time sensibilities and habits of the past that we cling so tightly to.

Chapters include such gems as:

"She's So Fat, She's Gonna Blow", which discusses how our love of good Southern food is spreading our waistlines;

"Dr. Bubba Drives a Truck", which is the modern Southern man's struggle to grow with the cosmopolitan ways that are slowly creeping into rural lives, while still maintaining his Bubba-niss;

and

"They Smoke While Standing Up", discussing how Southern Women strive to live in today's society, all the while maintaining her Old-time Southern decorum and charm.

This book is thoughtful, humorous and a bit rowdy.

If you have delicate sensibilities, it might not be for you, but for the rest of us, it's a great read with lots of snortin good fun (gotta love when you do that in public while reading at lunch) and just as many thoughtful passages that you can't help but agree with.

I say check it out.

Welcome to the Book Review Section at the Dew!

If you are a publishing house or author who has a book Southern in nature, or by a Southern writer, that you would like the Dew to review, please contact me at dewonthekudzu@gmail.com and I will provide you mailing information. (Wink wink, nudge nudge... the Dew has been getting a little lax about the Southern rule recently... just saying.)

The Dew tries it's best to have a review online as close to the publication date as possible, depending on the number of books waiting for review.

Please note, book reviews are the Dew's "business". The Dew does NOT post it's reviews on other sites. Please do not request that we do so. Thank you.

BUT, if I review your book, you may feel free to share it wherever you wish!
