Raphael Semmes was a good Southern soldier/sea captain in the confederate navy who was true to the cause with the strongest of dedication.
He was the Captain of the CSS Alabama, a warship illegally built in England and sent out across the ocean to terrorize, capture and loot Union ships.
Semmes, never a soldier who made a strong presence before this position, took to the role like a second skin and became a fearsome name on the seas during the Civil War.
This book is a historical account of his personal and professional life during this period of history. His marriage, family, possible affairs and above all, his exploits at sea.
There aren't too many books out about the ocean battles during this time in history and this one has a nice balance between being a historical lesson and an excitement packed action novel.
