A book that comes at you from all angles during 1950's America. There's the big picture scare of polio, retaliation for bombings during the war, suburbia and woman's lib. These big issues are interspersed with hidden issues and everyday living of a group of family members who were raised so proper that they would "be polite to Hitler" should he show up to tea in the living room one day.
The big story surrounds the slightly smaller story of the star of the book - Agnes Scofield - who wakes up one day and realizes that her prim, proper and routine life is not how she wants to continue living. But breaking free is harder and more complicated that it may appear.
There are many characters and events in this book that really immerse you in that time period and make you think about how different... and how similar... it is to today's world.
