Rambles Around New Orleans by Roy Blount Jr.
Published by Crown Journeys, 2005
Roy Blount Jr. is a great writer and funny to boot. Feet on the Street is a slim volune(143 pages) about New Orleans, a city the author obviously has great affection for.
The book itself is broken up into eight rambles, as it were, each one concluding with a page or two of lagniappe. Lagniappe is a grand old New Orleans tradition that means 'a little something extra'. Each ramble is delightfully illuminating with enough insider information to make you feel as if you've been there, even if you haven't (and if you haven't, get thee there forthwith). The best one is his ode to the oyster--where to eat them in New Orleans, how to eat them and what happens to certain folks when they do eat them.
If you're planning to visit, this is a great way to prepare. If you've been, it's a nice companion with which to reminisce. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler y'all.
