"Somebody is Going to Die if Lilly Beth Doesn't Catch that Bouquet"
The Official Southern Ladies' Guide to Hosting the Perfect Wedding
Authors: Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hayes
Publisher: Hyperion Books
Publication Date: Spring 2007
This is one of the best "etiquette" books I've ever read - hysterically funny.
It starts out somewhat serious, talking about the Delta Mississippi weddings that are to be expected from the longtime citizens of that area. Soon you realize that while gentling ribbing those citizens for their mad eccentricities, these same humorous ideals are being celebrated.
This book details the hunt for the perfect wedding setting and reception from the very moment that the proud mamas realize they have a girl baby, all the way until these delicate Southern flowers are walking down the aisle. (As Daddy cries as he looks at the checkbook and takes a second job.)
It discusses the wedding disasters that proud Southern mamas will sail on thru, such as wedding dresses suddenly too tight in the waist due to an unexpected blessing a little early, to thunderstorms on the blessed day of the outdoor wedding, to Aunt Thelma imbibing a little too much hooch and embarrassing the pastor.
By the By, grooms are of course a necessary part of the wedding, but should stay out of the way and be quiet - like little children. They have no role in the actual wedding except to show up and look handsome.
While this is a wedding rib tickler of a book, interestingly enough, it also it chock full of Southern recipes! Everything from Gayden's Homemade Mayonnaise, Leg of Lamb, Stuffed Tomatoes, to my favorite - Meatballs a` la Mobile Home.
This is a fun read, but following the rules to throw yourself "The Last Delta Wedding" (meaning the most posh one yet) will cost a fortune in dollars, sanity and Zanax.
Oh, I did learn than we old school Southern ladies do NOT approve of a groom's cake.
