This is a great autobiography of a gentlemen that came into this world in 1927 and found his love of music almost immediately. Growing up in rural Appalachia, his mother offered him a pig or a guitar for his birthday. Smart boy took the guitar and set out on his quest to share his bluegrass music with the world. He headed out with his brother, Carter, and is still on the road touring to this day at the age of 82.
He won a Grammy in 2001 for the movie, Oh Brother, Where At Thou?, beating out Tim McGraw!
The writing in this book is clean and straight forward and gives great insight not only into the music world, but the world that Ralph grew up in. I very much enjoyed reading about his youth and the people he dealt with in small town America. While I like insight into the music industry, I enjoyed this part more.
If you’re not interested in learning more about Ralph Stanley, I still recommend this book for the history of Appalachian culture and Southern raisin’.
