This is a lovely slim book where you would not for one moment imagine that the author is based in Michigan. It’s very European, both in location and feel. The structure and flow of the writing is lovely and Old World. I quite liked it.
Carolina is a young Contessa in the late 1800s Italy who is engaged to the most eligible of rich young men in the area. He is perfect in every way. But Caroline has known Turri since she was 6 and he was 16. He’s an inventor and considered very odd, but has just enough money to stay in the same circle as her family.
They remain innocent friends for years, until Carolina begins to go blind. No one but Turri believes her. Her perfect fiancé, now husband, humors her and tells her to sit nearer to a window. They all think her clumsy. But Turri is there for her through it all. Researching her ailment and finally inventing a typewriter so that once she is fully blind she can continue to communicate with all.
A romance eventually begins. The why, how and will it last answers are for you to find out as you read this pretty book.
