As Truely and Courtney graduated from high school in Mississippi they let no dust settle before each fled for the Bay Area, California. Courtney, being the eldest moved out first, found love and set up house, making the way for Truely to follow.
They disappointed their parents of course, but both went on to form good lives with strong marriages and much success. Eventually the parents realize that the move to the West Coast was not the downfall they imagined.
Their lives roll along in the fashion that lives do.. love, loss, emptiness, etc. No children for either and eventually both of their marriages dissolve.
As they come together once more in their lonliness, after years of distant love within driving range of each other, an unexpected event lands in their lap and helps bring them together once again.
The event is the sudden appearance of Arnold, a distant acquaintance who shows up on Truely's doorstep one day and moves in before Truely realizes what's going on. Arnold is from the wrong side of the tracks, has a conviction or two on his juvenile record, never finished school, but has a strong determination to better his life and sees Truely as his way to where he needs to go. Unfortunately, Arnold is still a boy and doesn't always think of the consequences of what he does, leading to even more trouble for all of them.
This is a nice, heartfelt story of Truely, Courtney, Arnold and how they become a family in the end. The people act like real people, none of the story line becomes unbelievable and you can imagine many of situations occurring in your own life.
If you're from the South and not there right now, it also gives you a nice jolt of "home" memories.
I recommend this book.
