This is the story of Cassie, a woman who got pregnant too young and at the age of 30something is now struggling to recreate her life into one that she wanted, instead of one she feels she was forced into.
She married the father of her baby after being kicked out of her home as a teen, and as a result left the mountains she loved, the college she was going to attend, everything she knew - while at the same time marrying a man she may not have chosen to stay with in the long run, given the opportunity to choose.
Now in her 30s, with a teenage daughter that she doesn't get along with and a husband who works all the time, she have been given the unexpected opportunity to "run away" back to her childhood home with a new man.
This story is of Cassie's choices. Her choices will affect her husband, her lover and her daughter as they all wait to see what she will do. The ending takes a shocking turn that made me re-read the chapter before I took it in.
I'll be honest, I didn't like Cassie very much, but the story was nicely told and I really felt for the husband and daughter. The descriptions of the Carolina beaches and mountains were wonderful and I felt that I was there with them. The beauty of Carolina was clear in every sentence.
