The Dew has reviewed two other Joshilyn Jackson books in prior years - Between, Georgia and Gods in Alabama. The main character of her newest book, Rose Mae Lolly, appeared in Gods in Alabama as a cameo character. The main character in Gods in Alabama now has a cameo in Rose’s story.
Rose, or as most people know her – Ro, has not had a good life. Her mother was abused by her father and left them both when Ro was 8. Ro than started receiving the punches and kicks her mother used to receive. It’s hard to forgive someone for leaving their child behind to deal with that. She’s never heard from her mother since.
As soon as she’s old enough, Ro runs away and roams from town to town until she meets Thom in a diner and before she knows it, she’s a married lady with an entirely new persona she shows to the world of a genteel southern housewife. Only problem is that she’s still being beaten, and worse than her daddy ever did.
One day she sees a woman who may very well be her mother. A woman who lives in California. Combining this with a beating that puts her in the hospital, Ro decides it’s time to take control of her life and get out of the current life before she dies.
Ro may just die trying to get to that new life though.
This book doesn't hold too many likable characters - but they certain hold your attention.
