3 Mississippi Books Perfect for Gift Giving (or keeping for yourself!)
Nov 28, 2012

These are some wonderful books that I recently received from Nautilus Publishing.  I pushed to get the reviews out for them as I feel that they could be nice gifts for the holiday season for your photograph lover, country music fan or trivia buff.

One thing I want to point out - Nautilus does a fine job of making these beautiful books affordable.  The Color of Mississippi and Chocktaw Gardens are only $38.00 each - which is amazingly affordable for full color coffee table books.

The Color of Mississippi is truly a beautiful book.  Being from Mississippi I adored looking at it in it's glory - so often it maintains the reputation of being a backwards redneck state - people forget it also has true beauty of the land. This is a table encompassing book - slim, but long.. maybe 15 or 18 inches long!

Choctaw Gardens is a different book.  At first I wasn't sure why you would be interested in this book if you weren't a Marty Stuart fan... most photographs are of his youth and only a few toward the back show his Opry moments and friends.  But as I looked through the book I realized that the photographs were indeed showing a time in America and that the book can hold a high nostalgia value for people who remember the 50's - 70s with fondness.  These are definitely family photos, but interesting to outsiders nonetheless.

As for the Mississippi trivia book - what can I say?  Everyone loves trivia!  I rather tortured my husband last evening with Ship Island, Biloxi and Gulfport trivia (my old stomping grounds).  Trivia and obscure facts that you can throw out to others is just fun.

Choctaw Gardens
Choctaw Gardens by Hilda Stuart & Marty Stuart • Foreword by Tom Rankin. Hilda Stuart’s photographs reflect the compelling power and range of Eudora Welty and William Eggleston. She has created an exceptional body of work that encompasses timeless Mississippi images.

Hilda Stuart’s photographs capture life’s seemingly arbitrary moments in a gripping and intimate way, giving viewers insight into southern life from the late 1940s to modern day. The images in Choctaw Gardens not only trace the lives of Hilda and her family, they also highlight the technological advancements in photography in the 20th century through an abrupt shift from black and white to color photographs.

Welcome to the Book Review Section at the Dew!

If you are a publishing house or author who has a book Southern in nature, or by a Southern writer, that you would like the Dew to review, please contact me at dewonthekudzu@gmail.com and I will provide you mailing information. (Wink wink, nudge nudge... the Dew has been getting a little lax about the Southern rule recently... just saying.)

The Dew tries it's best to have a review online as close to the publication date as possible, depending on the number of books waiting for review.

Please note, book reviews are the Dew's "business". The Dew does NOT post it's reviews on other sites. Please do not request that we do so. Thank you.

BUT, if I review your book, you may feel free to share it wherever you wish!
