A selection of favorite first and last lines from stories by contemporary Oxford writers. Great opening and closing lines from 30 of Oxford’s contemporary writers, including Richard Ford, John Grisham, Barry Hannah, Larry Brown, Dean Faulkner Wells, Tom Franklin and Curtis Wilkie.

Idgie Says:
You know how now and again you read the opening line to a story and  immediately feel that this is going to be a great book and you become excited about it, with a can't wait to dig in feeling?  Well, you look through this book and I guarantee you will find several books you suddenly NEED to read as you peruse not only their opening passages, but the closing ones too.

Read these paragraphs and realize the power in those words, the emotion they bring forth.  I say that this book is a wonderful way to explore other books that you might not have come across, but will now hunt down with determination!

Additionally, a few of these passages reminded me of books that I had read in the past and peaked my interest to find them on my bookshelf and give them another spin.

An interesting book that in the end is also useful!

Welcome to the Book Review Section at the Dew!

If you are a publishing house or author who has a book Southern in nature, or by a Southern writer, that you would like the Dew to review, please contact me at dewonthekudzu@gmail.com and I will provide you mailing information. (Wink wink, nudge nudge... the Dew has been getting a little lax about the Southern rule recently... just saying.)

The Dew tries it's best to have a review online as close to the publication date as possible, depending on the number of books waiting for review.

Please note, book reviews are the Dew's "business". The Dew does NOT post it's reviews on other sites. Please do not request that we do so. Thank you.

BUT, if I review your book, you may feel free to share it wherever you wish!
