The Southern Cross

The Southern Cross
Author: Skip Horack
Paperback: 224 pages
Publisher: Mariner Books (August 12, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-13: 978-0547232782

A great collection of chapters that tell assorted stories occurring right before, during and after Katrina.

They are generally not about Katrina at all but touch on the subject in small detail to describe location, lack of work, hardship, etc. A few of the stories barely touch on the storm, while others take place during the flooding or afterwards in a FEMA park.

These stories do not depend on Katrina to tell a good tale - it's used more as a backdrop to people living lives in a manner they may have regardless of circumstances.

There's some great writing in here that does a fine job of describing the South as it is today. Everyday people from "rabbit farmers" to dock workers. People just getting by in the world.

A small book, but the stories are meaty and well worth a second go-round.

Welcome to the Book Review Section at the Dew!

If you are a publishing house or author who has a book Southern in nature, or by a Southern writer, that you would like the Dew to review, please contact me at dewonthekudzu@gmail.com and I will provide you mailing information. (Wink wink, nudge nudge... the Dew has been getting a little lax about the Southern rule recently... just saying.)

The Dew tries it's best to have a review online as close to the publication date as possible, depending on the number of books waiting for review.

Please note, book reviews are the Dew's "business". The Dew does NOT post it's reviews on other sites. Please do not request that we do so. Thank you.

BUT, if I review your book, you may feel free to share it wherever you wish!
