When the Dew was given the opportunity to review a graphic novel we jumped at it! How often is there a "comic book" out there for adults that's considered solid, real work?
This is a fantastic depiction of Katrina and how it affected people in New Orleans. It tells the story of 7 different people who lived through Katrina: the ones who stayed, the ones who left and the ones that got shipped to the Superdome.
The tales are told through their eyes - why they decided not to leave, why they were angry with people that didn't understand that some of the poorer people had no way to leave, how they felt abandoned at the Superdome, what they came home to later......if they came home at all.
It's well written, shows a wonderful mix of characters and might just help you understand the whys and hows of the situation a little bit more. A quick read, but one you might visit another time or two before you finally put it down.
I, as a former Mississippian, was pleased that while the book is not about Mississippi, it does take a couple of pages in the beginning to show the devastation that occurred there also.
This could could be used as a good life learning tool for tweens and almost adults, but it doesn't pull punches - there is profanity and a graphic or two that you might not wish them to see.
