What a sad story. What a gripping story. What a well written story.
This is a must read.
I can think of barely a happy, carefree moment in this book, who's main character is poor little Lori Jean. It's a story of abuse - mental and physical - poverty, alcoholism, tragedy and murder.
Lori Jean is a little 10 year old girl who's whole life has been filled with misfortune. Her real daddy ran away, her mother is useless and weak, they are dirt poor and now she has a step-daddy that's on the short road to hell.
But Lori Jean manages to maintain enough love in her life and retain a child's positive outlook on things that she continues to thrive and grow - until she is murdered for trying to hide another person's crime to help them not get caught.
Now don't get riled - I can tell you that part of the story without giving anything away. You see, she tells you she was murdered in the very first sentence. By the end of the first two pages you know by who. The book goes back in time from there.
Having several children of my own, the story wrenched at my heart and many a time I wanted to put the book down and not come back to it. In the end though the writing was just so good I couldn't help but read on. You can't do less than adore this child - to her end she attempts to be helpful and think of other's feelings. You want to climb into that story and save her before the awful, horrible event that takes her life occurs.
This story will stick with you for a good long while.
