Lust, love, longing, hate, greed, jealousy, vanity - all of these emotions create the heart of this story. Then throw in supposed witchcraft to top the whole thing off like a cherry on a root beer float.
Aberdeen is a tiny little forgotten town in the middle of nowhere. So small that the schoolhouse is still only one room, where the big kids help teach the little ones.
Truly and Serena Jane, siblings, are born and raised in this town, but their lives are oh so different. Serena is a beautiful child who grows into a beautiful woman. One who mistakenly believes her looks will lead her into great things in life. Truly is a monstrously large and unattractive child, with an abnormal growth gene, who's mother dies while birthing her and she lives with this guilt on her head from day one.
Surrounding them are the townpeople who care for them when their father also dies... many loving and caring for Serena Jane, and only the one outcast family on the outskirts of town taking Truly into their ramshackle and rundown home.
A mainstay in both their lives is the town doctor, Bob Bob. He is a doctor for only one reason... the last 4 generations of his family have been the town healers. He has no passion for people or healing, but he has a strong passion for Serena Jane. He also holds a strong loathing for Truly. His life and their lives are intertwined in ways that will tear apart the community and families.
To top it all off, Truly discovers the Shadow Book, a recipe book of toxic and also healing plants written by the granddaughter of a witch burned at the stake 150 years ago. Suddenly, she holds power in her hands, after years of being beaten down by the entire town.
Now the story gets interesting......
