This is a completely different type of Southern book then I have read in a long while. This story veers off course in ways you will find completely unexpected and shocking.
I loved it!
It starts with two down on their luck losers driving aimlessly to the beach. Romeo and Shaw. Romeo is a lost soul, while Shaw is either completely insane or a sociopath. I never was sure which.
They pull into to a gas station in South Georgia to check their air tire and hear about a local family that just won the multi-million dollar lotto ticket from that exact store. It had not yet been announced.
Wham! Just like that Shaw has a plan.
He promptly finds the family, takes them hostage, proclaims he will "win" half the money with their “shared ticket” and sets Romeo out patrolling all their family/friends houses with the order to kill them all if the winning ticket family doesn’t go along with the story.
Here starts the winding, twisting tale of the Boatwright family and the bad guys. Before the end of the story there is despair, remorse, salvation, possible love, plus many other emotions you certainly would not expect within the interactions of these people who are thrown together in this situation.
Then, the ending comes out and smacks you in the face – I totally did not expect it.
Definitely a recommended book!
