Karen continues her story of Melanie and Jack in the second book in this series. The first was The House on Tradd Street - which the Dew reviewed earlier in the year.
Melanie has the disconcerting ability to be bothered by spirits. By bother, we don't mean seeing them wander by in the hallway - ghosts slap her, throw stuff at her, push her around and occasionally kiss her. Melanie is a no nonsense kind of gal who doesn't enjoy dealing with pesky dead people all day.
She also has to deal with Jack, her hot author "friend" who would really like to be more than friends, and a mother who suddenly shows up after 33 years and wants to be pals again. Her mother left Melanie and her father when she was 7 - this doesn't make her feel like suddenly being all buddy-buddy with her mom.
Her mother claims she's there for a reason, that there's a spirit that's coming for Melanie with a ticked off attitude.
So begins a story of mysterious relations, murder, pirating, ancestor switching and one ghost who wants what she feels she lost when she died.
This is a stand alone book that doesn't require you to read the first one to follow the story - but I feel it would be good idea to read The House on Tradd Street first as it really fleshes out a lot of the relationships and personality quirks of the characters.
I enjoyed these two in the series and look forward to the rest!
