I came across this book in the library, it was not sent to me by the publishing house, and am I glad I picked it up!
I had no idea it was a Southern book at all, but come to find out the story takes place in the mountains above Asheville, North Carolina.
What a frightening story it is - frightening because it can apparently happen and we're not sure what we can do about it.
3 nuclear missiles are launched off the coasts of America high into our atmosphere. Instead of bombing our country, the explode and knock out all electricity. No phones, lights, cell phones, refrigerators, MEDICINE. Most cars don't run because they're so computerized. Within minutes the United States is set back 100 years or more. Everyone that needs medicine or machines to keep them alive immediately starts to die. It's truly horrific.
This small mountain town is completely cut off from any remnants of civilisation - yet with no food and little water, people start streaming out of the cities into the hills for protection, food, warmth, etc. They don't realize these small towns are dependent on communication, computerization and electricity to get food there.
John, a retired Colonial, finds himself trying to keep a town together and help his own family survive while they desperately wait for the United States Government to pull itself together and save America.
Forward by Newt Gingrich and Afterword by General Eugene Habinger, USAF (retired), Former Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Strategic Command.
By the way, it's such a gripping book that I read it in one day - stayed up way past my bedtime!
