The Council of Dads is an amazingly sweet and humor filled book. At first the preface may lead you to believe it will be a dour, sad and heart-wrenching book - but it turns out to be the opposite.
Up until his 40's, Bruce led a fantastic life - traveled extensively, earned a living writing about his travels which turned into bestsellers (fantastic!) and then topped it off with a marriage to a great woman and an adorable set of twin girls. Life was golden.
A routine visit for a physical turned his world upside down. A seven inch long cancerous tumor was found in his femur.
As panic sets in, Bruce comes up with a game plan for his daughters, in case he does not make it through this illness. He writes to 6 of his male friends asking that they become "The Council of Dads" to the girls, should he die.
The book is filled with lovely stories of his life, interspersed with letters to the men he's asking assistance from. All filled with acceptance and the joy of life, humor and love. At the same time, it is a memoir filled with the grim reality of fighting a battle with cancer - the surgeries, chemo treatments, days of mental despair and learning to cope.
A really great book that I do highly recommend.
