Lucas Mackley is a man who you’re not sure is a good guy, a bad guy, or just a guy making his way through a life not necessarily of his choosing. He’s hard to pin down.
The story starts with Lucas in his retirement home for veterans in Gulfport, Mississippi. He sits alone, not longing for any companionship, happy to keep company with his memories only.
His thoughts go back to the 1950s, when he joins the Airforce through a set of circumstances that were not planned actions, he rather fell into it. He trains in Biloxi before transferring to a base outside of Myrtle Beach.
Here he meets the love of his life and forms a loose friendship with a group of men. But things take an ugly turn when women start showing up dead and beaten in the area and Lucas always seems to be in the picture somehow. A lot of fingers point at him and his moody tendencies. He doesn’t always have a reputation for being a swell, friendly and outgoing guy. The police are soon hot on his trail.
What follows is Lucas’ attempt to prove that he is not the murderer. The only way to prove that to the police is to actually find out who is committing the crimes. How many other women will die before someone is caught – and the love of Lucas’ life, Emily, is she in danger too?
A good Southern suspense “who done it” novel.
