What a lovely story. It centers around true and abiding love, but also alludes to secrets that quite a few people kept hidden, separately and together, for over 70 years.
Levy is a small town where not much happens. People are kind to each other, everyone knows each other, it's quiet. Magnolia (Maggie), George and Ash all pal around together and spend their days swimming in the watering hole and hanging out at the general store.
All that changes the day a strange man comes to town with his son Joe. A man that seems intent on evil. On this day, the lives of 4 children will change forever.
The book goes back and forth from this time in Levy to the current day where 3 of the 4 children now reside in the same nursing home, and the other has not been heard of for 70 years.
On the day that George receives a package of a large picture of Maggie in her youth, all the repressed memories and guilt that has been hidden for years comes to the surface. Can George let old secrets stay hidden to keep peace or will the need to relieve himself of guilt win out?
While this book has a big mystery and hidden hurts that slowly become known as the story goes along, the lasting love and companionship that lead three boys to protect one small girl, at their own personal loss, for over 70 years is joyful to read.
