Lucy left her home town years ago, still feeling the guilt of her father's death from drowning in the lake. You see, he had really wanted her to go out with him and she refused. Had no time to spend with a parent. Had better things to do. Then something happened to him while he was out there alone and he drowned.
When the story starts, Lucy is living with her boyfriend in Japan - her career on hold as she follows him to his new job. At this point she's feeling pretty aimless. When her mother has a minor car accident back in the United States, Lucy uses this as an excuse to go home. She also uses this as an excuse to think about her relationship with her boyfriend and whether she wants it to continue or not. What direction does she want her life to head in?
While at home, she starts poking through family heirlooms and comes across a hefty packet of old letters, starting at the turn of the century. What she discovers is a family mystery, hidden relatives, secrets never revealed. She also discovers that her old boyfriend is back in town.
This book then becomes two stories. One is Lucy's story and how her life will evolve and the other is the story of the mysterious Iris, and how history may affect the current events in Lucy's life.
A gentle book of "What ifs".
