A self published, hearty sized book that is chock full of visions and memories of the North Alabama Hills.
Eugene tells amusing and entertaining stories involving everything from carnival peep shows to testy, biting mules. He describes being a country boy, learning the value of hard work, and being in awe of glimpses of how other people live whenever he had the chance to get off the mountain and see other pieces of the world.
The descriptions are clear and easy to envision, and he speaks with an honesty you can feel in the words.
If you want to immerse yourself in a little piece of Southern past, this is a lovely book to do so with.

Had Thomas Wolf read Eugene Scruggs' The View from Brindley Mountain, I believe that even he would have to admit that you "can" go home again. Scruggs' detailed account of his early life in a small southern town during the forties and fifties awakens numerous memories for individuals who grew up during those years and in similar circumstances. Religious, educational, economic, medical and social aspects of the time are recorded with both humor and angst and leaves the reader with the desire to glean additional information when reaching the final page of this captivating and nostalgic book.
