All of the reviews that I have previously read about this book compare it to The Thorn Birds. I would have to agree in that it is a epic saga of a family fighting to continue it's dynasty and perceived destiny.
This story is set in Texas instead of Australia and combines three family's histories into one multi-generational story of how they lived, loved, fought and overcame tragedy together.
Three different families came over to America from France and England, setting out across the American wilderness to find their own place in the world. They settled in Texas, developed cotton, lumber and mercantile empires and lived in each other's pockets for the next 4 generations.
But it is each family's pride in their own empire - at the cost of their personal lives and happiness - that is the heart of the story. Setting land and family tradition above their own wants and needs leads to heartache and bitterness.
I'm not going to go into detail in regards to the story as there's quite a few surprise twists and turns that I wouldn't want to give away. Suffice to say, the story keeps you in it's grip the entire time. Well written and engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. It's a big hearty book that you should take your time enjoying - not a one day read.
I highly recommend it.
