This is a generational story set in the Appalachia's - on Bloodroot Mountain. Timeline is the Depression through to modern day.
The story weaves back and forth between grandmother, mother, twin children and the people that flit in and out of their lives.
Byrdie takes in young Myra after her parents are killed by a train. She instantly recognizes that Myra has skills and powers to speak to nature and read the future and the present. This skill alone will become too much for Myra to handle in the long run.
This tale follows Byrdie in adulthood, Myra into adulthood followed by insanity, and Myra's children from their birth into their adult lives. Grief and tragedy seem to follow all of them - but at the same time their love keeps them a strong family unit.
I won't say much more about the story itself as it would give too much away, but suffice to say this is a strong book with great mental visuals of the time and place the story centers around. This is not a "happy" book. All of the characters in the book talk, each having their own passages to describe what's happening at that time. You need to keep close attention to stay on track with the story. If you enjoy Appalachian history and culture, you should enjoy this book.
