Ali, Cora and Benny have all known each other since middle school. Both Cora and Benny have been exceptionally close to Ali, even though they’re not that close to each other. So close in fact that Benny married Ali, and Cora gave her the eggs with which she conceived Letty 14 years ago.
Benny and Ali have had a nice suburban life with Letty while Cora has traveled the world for her work. She returns home once or twice a year for a few days and Ali and she never have trouble bringing their friendship up to speed. Meanwhile, Benny and Ali have always been a pleasantly married couple with little or no strife between them.
One day it all changes.
Ali has secretly been yearning for another child now that Letty is about to turn 15 and growing more independent by the day. As she’s wondering how to bring the subject up to her husband of another baby after all this time, she realizes that Benny is beginning to act strangely toward her, his work and his life in general. He’s not the Benny she’s known all these years. A touch of fear enters her heart.
Meanwhile, Cora has unexpectedly come back into town, and she doesn’t look well. She has a secret that she must share with Ali that will affect all of their lives – Cora, Ali, Benny and even Letty. Before Ali can even contemplate another baby, she must learn the truth. A truth that could devastate her.
What starts out as a simple, middle of life story between three people soon turns into a fast paced drama with heartache, fear, love, guilt and forgiveness. It definitely headed off into directions I did not expect. A great read to start off the warm months with.
