This is a murder mystery tale full of damaged people. Not one of the people in the book are without internal scars, misplaced morals, deeply hidden issues or have suffered great personal loss. While the story itself is very interesting, it’s not a happy book.
Corrine has recently married Buddy, heir to a nice fat family fortune as soon as his Uncle Stanley dies. Unfortunately, Stanley is made of hardy Greek stock and keeps on ticking, all the while deriding Buddy for marrying a women he does not approve of. While Stanley lives, he will not sell his factory to one of the many larger companies willing to throw large sums of money their way. He will also not accept Corrine into the family nor even be civil to her.
Not surprisingly, Stanley is murdered. While this is a murder story, it’s not so much of a mystery of who, but why and how.
One person sees the murder occur, Jack. But Jack happens to be suffering from Alzheimer’s and while he witnesses the murder, he can only bring it to the forefront of his mind now and again – often not when a policeman is around to hear what he has to say.
Into the story comes Ben, a transplanted cop with issues of his own. He was a detective who demoted himself back to the streets and feels he’s happy there. Until this murder comes along. While he’s trying to learn what actually happened, he must stay close to Jack.. and Jack’s single daughter.
This is a book that I feel centers more around character development and the actions in their lives than the actual murder that brings them together. That’s not a bad thing.
