Abigail had a career she loved, a husband and son that meant the world to her and a house full of bookish treasures that she had spent her life collecting. In a night it was all gone.
She decides to withdraw from the world she knows and head off to a place her husband used to visit as a child and that he talked about with love - Chapel Isle, North Carolina. In an unlikely turn of events, she becomes the caretaker for an unused lighthouse – haunted by the last keeper.
The story continues as she meets the island people, complete with their individual quirks and histories. She slowly becomes used to them, and vice–versa as she begins to find comfort in her new home. When the hurricane heads in their direction and everyone is told to evacuate, Abigail must decide whether she wants this to become her new home, or if she will leave and not come back.
A nice story that I found myself immersed in right away without floundering through the first chapters until interest sparks. I especially enjoyed that while Abigail did have a tragic back-story, it was not brought forth as a pity piece in the story itself. It was simply a tool for the reader to understand her actions and feelings.
