A very good story from the author of The Heretic's Daughter (A Dew Review) revolving around Martha, a young woman who is too stubborn and argumentative to find a husband. She finds herself "sold" to her cousin as a housekeeper by her father and while there meets Thomas, an indentured servant who slowly breaks down her defenses and begins courting her.
What she is unaware of though is his possible role in the murder of King Charles. He may not be an indentured servant as much as a killer hiding from those looking for him.
The book represents that time in American and British history very well - the atmosphere, way of life, the dirt. It doesn't glamorize it at all.
A well written book that will keep you interested the entire way through.
