Charleston Gardens and the Landscape Legacy of Loutrel Briggs
Author: James R. Cothran
Hardcover: 210 pages
Publisher: University of South Carolina Press (September 17, 2010)
Language: English
ISBN-13: 978-1570038914

What a gorgeous book! One that you will proudly keep out on the coffee table to look through repeatedly.

This book shows the career of renowned landscape architect Loutrel Briggs, who is often stated as being responsible for the distinctive Charleston garden style.

There are almost 140 photographs of beautiful Charleston gardens in here. In between all the photographs is text telling about Loutrel's life and how he started down the road to his garden fame. There are detailed stories on the gardens themselves and the history surrounding them and the land they set on. So this is not only a very attractive book, but also an informative one. Especially helpful to someone looking to create a garden is a full description of plants and their native lands that will successfully grow in our climate.

I was slightly disappointed that this beautiful book actually ends on page 119 and the remaining 80 or so pages is plain print archive information, but at the same time, if you are a serious landscape gardener this would be very helpful to you as it shows what gardens have plans available to study.

A wonderful Christmas gift to either a serious landscape gardener or someone who simply enjoys the beauty of Charleston.

Welcome to the Book Review Section at the Dew!

If you are a publishing house or author who has a book Southern in nature, or by a Southern writer, that you would like the Dew to review, please contact me at dewonthekudzu@gmail.com and I will provide you mailing information. (Wink wink, nudge nudge... the Dew has been getting a little lax about the Southern rule recently... just saying.)

The Dew tries it's best to have a review online as close to the publication date as possible, depending on the number of books waiting for review.

Please note, book reviews are the Dew's "business". The Dew does NOT post it's reviews on other sites. Please do not request that we do so. Thank you.

BUT, if I review your book, you may feel free to share it wherever you wish!
