A very interesting premise to this book. It starts off with the normal type of mid-life situations that occur: a marriage based on companionship and living in a house together but not much more, certain friends who are your friends only because of the social situation and lifestyle you lead – not because you are drawn to each other, and of course social situations and organizations that you belong to because of that certain lifestyle. In other words, lives lived because they should be that way, not because it’s wanted.
Jen and Will have a perfect home, perfect country club life….. and nothing in common anymore. They live around each other. Then two things happen. Her perfect Judge husband is accused of taking bribes and disbarred. He is suddenly moping around the house all day with no plan. She has no idea how to talk to him anymore. She can't escape and go to the country club to hang out with her so called friends as they’ve ostracized her. She can’t go to her usual upscale grocery store in case she runs into them there and would have to deal with their cold shoulders.
As her anxiety mounts, she goes to her herbalist who gives her a “prescription” of healing herbs to help her sleep. Jen soon realizes that when she sleeps, she steps into her friend’s and family’s minds and she suddenly can see what’s actually going on with them. She learns all their secrets. Their perfect lives aren't so perfect either.
Will this help her as she struggles to decide how to continue her own life or will it bog her down with their issues also?
The ending is a complete, unexpected surprise and it’s always a treat when this occurs in a story you’ve become immersed in.
